Recall Information Record: Trek Bicycle Corporation – Road Bikes and Bicycle Handlebar/Stems

1. Recall Summary
Trek Bicycle Corporation, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Health Canada, is conducting a voluntary recall of certain model year (MY) 2022 Speed Concept SLR bicycles, MY 2021 and MY 2022 Emonda SLR bicycles, and MY 2020, 2021, and 2022 aftermarket Bontrager Aeolus RSL VR-C handlebar/stems. The recall was published on August 25, 2022. The recall number is 22209. The recall is due to a fall and crash hazard associated with the carbon fiber handlebars.

2. Affected Products
The recall includes the following products:
– Bicycles: MY 2022 Trek Speed Concept SLR models (including Speed Concept SLR 9, SLR 9 eTap, SLR 7, SLR 7 eTap, and SLR 6 eTap). All 2022 Speed Concept stock and Project One (P1) colorways are affected.
– Bicycles: MY 2021 and MY 2022 Trek Emonda SLR models (including Emonda SLR 6, SLR 6 eTap, SLR 7, SLR 7 eTap, SLR 8, SLR 9, and SLR 9 eTap). All MY 2021-2022 Emonda SLR stock and P1 colorways are affected.
– Aftermarket Components: MY 2020, 2021, and 2022 Bontrager Aeolus RSL VR-C handlebar/stems sold separately.
– Identification: The word “Trek” is printed on the bicycle’s frame.
– Units: Approximately 3,200 bicycles and 900 aftermarket handlebar/stems in the United States. In addition, approximately 530 bicycles and 115 aftermarket handlebar/stems in Canada.
– Sale Period and Price: The products were sold at bicycle stores nationwide and online at trekbikes.com and other online retailers from May 2020 through June 2022. Prices ranged from $8,800 to $13,500 for Speed Concept SLR models; from about $6,700 to $13,000 for Emonda SLR models; and about $680 for the Bontrager Aeolus RSL VR-C handlebar/stem sold separately.
– Manufacturer/Importer: Trek Bicycle Corporation, Waterloo, Wisconsin.
– Country of Origin: Bicycles were manufactured in Taiwan, Germany, and the United States. Handlebars were manufactured in China.

3. Hazard Information
The bicycle’s carbon handlebars can crack. This poses fall and crash hazards to the rider. As of the recall date, Trek has received 37 reports of broken carbon handlebars. There has been one report of injury involving scrapes and bruises.

4. Consumer Action Required
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled bicycles and aftermarket handlebar/stems. Consumers should contact their local authorized Trek retailer to schedule a free repair. No other action is specified in the recall notice.

The official remedy is a free repair. Consumers are instructed to take the recalled product to an authorized Trek retailer for this service. The remedy option listed is replacement.
