On July 20, 2023, Salewa USA LLC, of Boulder, Colorado, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), announced a recall of Wild Country brand Superlight Rocks cable wire chocks used for climbing. The recall was initiated due to a fall hazard. The recall notice is identified by CPSC Recall Number 23247. Approximately 3,550 units were sold in the United States, and an additional 225 units were sold in Canada. No injuries have been reported in the United States in connection with this recall.

2. Affected Products
The recall involves Wild Country Superlight Rocks single cable wire chocks. Two specific model numbers are included: model number 40-RSL (Superlight Rocks, sold individually) and model number 40-RSLSET (Superlight Rocks Set 1-6, sold as a set of six). The recalled products were sold in six different sizes and colors: size 1 (purple), size 2 (green), size 3 (silver), size 4 (gold), size 5 (blue), and size 6 (red). The brand name “Wild Country,” the product name “Superlight Rocks,” and the batch code are located on the swage (the metal sleeve) on the chock. The products were manufactured in Taiwan. The recalled items were sold at REI, MEC, and other specialty outdoor stores nationwide and online at www.wildcountry.com, www.backcountry.com, and www.campsaver.com from January 2017 through February 2023. Individual units were sold for between $14 and $16, and a set of six was sold for approximately $80.

3. Hazard Information
The hazard associated with these products is that when exposed to seaside (coastal or marine) conditions, corrosion can occur. This corrosion can weaken the cable chocks, potentially causing them to break. If the chock breaks during use, it poses a fall hazard to climbers. The recall notice states that no injuries have been reported in the United States as of the date of the recall.

4. Consumer Action Required
Consumers are instructed to immediately stop using the recalled Wild Country Superlight Rocks. After ceasing use, consumers should contact Wild Country to coordinate the free shipment of a replacement product. The official remedy for this recall is a free replacement product. Consumers have two options for the replacement. Alternatively, consumers may choose to receive the new version of the Superlight Rocks, which is stated to be available in September 2023. All shipping and product costs associated with the replacement are covered by the recalling firm.
