Recall Information Record: Open Cycle Bicycles and Framesets

1. Recall Summary
On March 30, 2023, Open Cycle AG, of Switzerland, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), announced a recall of approximately 270 Open Cycle-branded bicycles and framesets. The recall involves models U.P. Ekar, UPPER Ekar, WIDE Ekar, and MIND Ekar, as well as all Open Cycle framesets equipped with a Campagnolo hydraulic rear disc brake. The recalled products were sold in matte black, blue, gray, orange, or custom colors. Only bicycles and framesets with Campagnolo hydraulic brakes and hoses are included in this recall. The “OPEN” logo is located on the top of the downtube, and the model name is located on the top of the top tube, near the seat tube.

2. Affected Products
The affected products are Open Cycle bicycles and framesets sold under the following model names: U.P. Ekar, UPPER Ekar, WIDE Ekar, and MIND Ekar. All Open Cycle framesets using a Campagnolo hydraulic rear disc brake are also included. The products were sold at independent bicycle stores nationwide and online at www.opencycle.com from November 2021 through February 2023 for between $5,000 and $8,300. The number of units affected is about 270. The manufacturer is Open Cycle AG, of Switzerland. The importer is Messingschlager USA LLC., dba Cycle Force, of Ames, Iowa.

3. Hazard Information
The hazard identified in the recall notice is that the rear brake can fail, posing a crash hazard. Open Cycle has received two reports of Campagnolo brake hoses becoming damaged. No injuries have been reported.

4. Consumer Action Required
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled bicycles and framesets. Consumers should contact their local bicycle dealer to schedule free installation of the repair kit. The repair kit includes a hydraulic brake hose/line and a new frame insert for the rear brake hose and rear shift cable.

5. Official Remedy
The official remedy is a repair. The repair kit includes a hydraulic brake hose/line and a new frame insert for the rear brake hose and rear shift cable. The repair is to be installed free of charge by a local bicycle dealer.
