Recall Information Record: American Honda Motor Co., Inc. – Lawnmowers, Pressure Washer Engines, and Lawnmower Replacement Engines

1. Recall Summary
On May 2, 2024, American Honda Motor Co., Inc., in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), announced an expansion of a previous recall (September 2023) involving certain Honda lawnmowers, general-purpose engines used in pressure washers, and lawnmower replacement engines. This expansion adds approximately 200 lawnmower replacement engines to the recall. The original September 2023 recall covered about 391,800 lawnmowers and pressure washer engines. The recall expansion is due to an injury hazard involving the engine camshaft.

2. Affected Products
The recall includes the following products:
Honda HRN216 and HRX217K6 walk-behind lawnmowers. These are gas-fueled, red and black mowers with “HONDA” written on the clipping collection bag. The model and serial number are printed on a label located on the upper rear of the mower deck.
Honda GCV170/200 G5B general-purpose engines. These engines are used in pressure washers and are mounted on various original equipment manufacturer frames. The serial number of the engine is engraved on a flat spot on the engine.
Honda lawnmower replacement engines. These engines are used to replace the existing engines on the HRN216 and HRX217K6 lawnmowers. The serial number of the replacement engine is engraved on a flat spot on the engine.

The products were sold at Honda Power Equipment dealers, Ace Hardware, Home Depot, Lowe’s, Northern Tool, and various farm, agricultural, and rental stores nationwide from May 2022 through June 2023. The lawnmowers were sold for between $550 and $1,100. The number of units in this expansion is about 200 additional lawnmower replacement engines. The total number of units previously recalled in September 2023 was about 391,800 lawnmowers and pressure washer engines.

3. Hazard Information
The hazard involves improperly manufactured camshafts in the engines. This defect can cause the starter rope to suddenly retract when pulling to start the engine, posing an injury hazard. Honda has received 2,966 reports of incidents related to camshaft failures since the last recall, in addition to the 2,197 reported incidents in the September 2023 recall. This includes 38 reports of minor injuries.

4. Consumer Action Required
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled lawnmowers and recalled pressure washers equipped with the recalled general-purpose engines. Consumers should contact an authorized Honda Power Equipment dealer to schedule an appointment for a free inspection and repair.

5. Official Remedy
The official remedy is a free inspection and repair by an authorized Honda Power Equipment dealer. No other remedy options are specified in the recall notice.
