1. Recall Summary
This recall involves the Fitbit Ionic Smartwatch. The recall was initiated on March 2, 2022, by Fitbit LLC, of San Francisco, California. The recall number is 22089. The smartwatch was sold with a polyurethane band and features a 1.4-inch color LCD screen. The device tracks activity, heart rate, and sleep. Fitbit stopped production of the Ionic in 2020. Approximately 1 million units were sold in the United States, and an additional 693,000 units were sold internationally.

2. Affected Products
The recall applies only to the Fitbit Ionic Smartwatch. The model number for all recalled devices is FB503. The model number is located on the back of the device near where the band attaches. The word “Fitbit” is printed on the front of the watch. The following specific models and colors are included in this recall:
– Ionic FB503CPBU: Slate Blue/Burnt Orange
– Ionic FB503GYBK: Charcoal/Smoke Gray
– Ionic FB503WTGY: Blue Gray/Silver Gray
– Ionic FB503WTNV: Adidas edition, Ink Blue & Ice Gray/Silver Gray

The watches were sold at Best Buy, Kohl’s, Target, and other stores nationwide, as well as online at Amazon.com and Fitbit.com. They were sold from September 2017 through December 2021 for a price range of $200 to $330. The manufacturer country is Taiwan.

3. Hazard Information
The lithium-ion battery in the Ionic smartwatch can overheat, posing a burn hazard. Fitbit has received at least 115 reports in the United States and 59 reports internationally of the battery in the watch overheating. This has resulted in 78 reports of burn injuries in the United States, including two reports of third-degree burns and four reports of second-degree burns. Internationally, there have been 40 reports of burn injuries.

4. Consumer Action Required
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled Ionic smartwatches. Consumers must contact Fitbit to receive pre-paid packaging to return the device. Upon receipt of the device, consumers will be issued a refund of $299. Fitbit will also provide participating consumers with a discount code for 40% off select Fitbit devices.

The official remedy is a refund. Consumers who return the recalled Ionic smartwatch to Fitbit will receive a refund of $299. Additionally, participating consumers will receive a discount code for 40% off select Fitbit devices.
