1. Recall Summary
English Riding Supply LLC, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Health Canada, is recalling Ovation Protégé model equestrian helmets. The recall was published on February 9, 2023. The recall involves approximately 49,300 units in the United States and an additional 5,270 units sold in Canada. The recall notice states that the helmets fail to meet the impact requirements of the ASTM F1163-15 standard.

2. Affected Products
The recall includes Ovation Protégé model equestrian helmets manufactured from December 2020 through December 2022. The helmets were sold in multiple colors and finishes. The model name “Ovation Protégé” and the date of manufacture are located on an SEI (Safety Equipment Institute) certification label inside the helmets. The letters “OV” are printed on the front of the helmets. The helmets were manufactured in Taiwan. The products were sold at tack shops and English equestrian specialty stores nationwide and online at www.amazon.com and www.statelinetack.com from January 2021 through December 2022 for a price between $58 and $66.

3. Hazard Information
According to the recall notice, the recalled helmets fail to meet the impact requirements of the ASTM F1163-15 standard for this type of helmet. This failure poses an impact injury hazard to riders who fall. As of the date of the recall notice, no injuries have been reported.

4. Consumer Action Required
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled Ovation Protégé helmets. Consumers must return the recalled helmets to the retailer where they were purchased or to any Ovation authorized dealer. Alternatively, consumers may contact English Riding Supply directly. Consumers are not required to return the physical helmet to English Riding Supply. To destroy the recalled helmets, consumers should cut off the harness straps. Consumers must then email a photo of the cut harness and a photo of the interior manufacturing label (clearly showing the manufacturing date and serial number) to helmets@englishridingsupply.com. The manufacturing label is located on the interior foam liner underneath the comfort liner; consumers will need to remove the comfort liner to access this label.

5. Official Remedy
Upon return of the recalled helmet OR upon proof of destruction of the recalled helmet (as described in Section 4), consumers will receive one of the following remedies:
– A free replacement Ovation Deluxe Schooler helmet; OR
– A $60 refund from English Riding Supply.
