1. Recall Summary

This recall involves electric motors used in gable- and roof-mounted attic fans. The motors were sold only from August 2003 through December 2013. The recalled motors were distributed by Air Vent Inc., of Dallas, Texas, and manufactured in China. The recall was initiated due to a fire hazard associated with the electric motor’s safety cutoff. The firm has received 159 reports of incidents related to the recalled attic fan motors involving burning or fire. No injuries have been reported. Approximately 2.9 million units are affected.

2. Affected Products

The recalled products are electric motors for gable- and roof-mounted attic fans. Only motors with a distinctive vent pattern on the motor end bells are subject to the recall. The following model numbers are included:

– DOW-136-0-34-XIN
– DOW-136-0-26-XIN
– DOW-136-0-40-XIN
– DOW-136-0-40-XIN-3/4″
– D-RE-PSC-127/20-4P1SP

The recalled electric motor vents align on the outer ring of the motor end bell (highlighted in yellow in the recall images) and use an alternating pattern of two long vents then two short vents. Unaffected motors have vents that align on the inner ring of the motor end bell and use an alternating pattern of one long then one short vent.

The attic fans with these motors were sold at various stores and wholesalers nationwide, including ABC Supply, Lowe’s, and Beacon, both in-store and online from August 2003 through December 2013. The retail price ranged from approximately $74 to $92.

3. Hazard Information

The recalled electric motor’s safety cutoff may pose a risk of short circuit and fire hazard while in use. As of the recall publication date, the firm has received 159 reports of incidents involving burning or fire related to the attic fan motors. No injuries have been reported.

4. Consumer Action Required

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled electric motors. Consumers should then contact Air Vent to initiate the recall process. Consumers will be asked to fill out an online registration and verification form, including providing photographs of the recalled attic fan motor. Upon confirmation that the consumer has a recalled attic fan motor, the consumer will receive a refund.

The official remedy is a refund. Consumers who complete the online registration and verification process and are confirmed to have a recalled motor will receive a refund from Air Vent.
