1. Recall Summary
On April 5, 2024, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) published Recall Number 24189. The recall involves approximately 8.2 million units of Tide Pods, Gain Flings, Ace Pods, and Ariel Pods liquid laundry detergent packets packaged in flexible film bags, distributed in the United States. An additional 56,741 units were sold in Canada. The recall was initiated by The Procter & Gamble Company, of Cincinnati, Ohio. The affected bags were manufactured between September 2023 and February 2024.

2. Affected Products
The recalled products are liquid laundry detergent packets sold in flexible film bags containing between 12 and 39 packets. The specific product names include:

– Gain Flings Spring Daydream Scent
– Gain Flings Plus Ultra Oxi
– Gain Flings Plus Odor Defense
– Tide Simply Pods Plus Oxi Boost
– Tide Pods Clean Breeze Scent
– Tide Pods Free & Gentle
– Tide Pods Oxi
– Tide Pods Ultra Oxi
– Tide Pods Original
– Tide Pods Spring Meadow Scent
– Tide Pods Light
– Ace Pods Clean Breeze
– Ace Pods Spring Meadow
– Ariel Pods Alpine Breeze

The bags were sold at Big Lots, CVS, Family Dollar, Home Depot, Sam’s Club, Target, Walmart, and other major stores nationwide, as well as online at Amazon.com and other websites, from September 2023 through the present. Prices ranged from $5 (for a single 12-count bag) to $30 (for a box of four 39-count bags). The recall applies only to bags distributed in the United States. Consumers can identify recalled bags by checking the lot code printed on the bottom of the package. Recalled lot codes are listed at pg.com/bags.

3. Hazard Information
The hazard involves the outer packaging of the recalled bags. The packaging, which is meant to prevent access to the contents, can split open near the zipper track. This defect poses a risk of serious injury to children and other vulnerable populations if the contents of the laundry detergent packets are ingested. It also poses a risk of skin or eye injuries. The recall notice states that ingestion of a large quantity of any surfactant-containing household cleaning products can cause death among individuals with underlying health issues. As of the recall date, the firm had received four reports of children in the United States accessing the liquid laundry packets. Three of those reports involved ingestion during the time period that the recalled lots were sold, but it is not known if these laundry packets came from recalled bags. No confirmed cases directly relating to this packaging defect have been reported.

4. Consumer Action Required
Consumers should immediately secure the recalled bags out of sight and reach of children. Consumers should check to see if their bag is part of the recall by locating the lot code on the bottom of the package and verifying it against the list of recalled lot codes at pg.com/bags. Consumers with recalled bags can submit a photo of the recalled product showing the lot code to participate in the recall.

5. Official Remedy
The official remedy is a full refund from Procter & Gamble. In addition, consumers will receive a free replacement child-resistant bag to store the product. Consumers can also receive a cabinet lock for securing laundry materials.
