1. Recall Summary
Black Diamond Equipment Ltd., of Salt Lake City, Utah, is recalling approximately 1,550 Recon LT avalanche transceivers in the United States (in addition, about 250 were sold in Canada). The recall involves Black Diamond Recon LT avalanche transceivers, Black Diamond Alpine Avy Safety Sets, and Black Diamond Recon LT Avy Safety Sets. The recalled transceivers were sold as a standalone unit and as part of an avalanche safety set. The transceivers are plastic with an LCD screen, have a gray exterior and a blue top, and feature the Black Diamond logo and model name on the front of the unit. The products were sold at Liberty Mountain, Recreational Equipment Inc. (REI), and other specialty outdoor stores nationwide, as well as online at www.blackdiamond.com, www.backcountry.com, and www.evo.com from May 2021 through March 2023 for between $350 and $500. The transceivers were manufactured in Austria and Bosnia.

2. Affected Products
The following three models are included in this recall, identified by their UPC codes located on the product’s box:
– BD RECON LT BEACON (UPC: 793661495475)
– BD ALPINE AVY SAFETY SET (UPC: 793661512837)
– BD RECON LT AVY SAFETY SET (UPC: 793661518532)

3. Hazard Information
The recalled transceivers can unexpectedly enter search mode due to interference from other beacons. If this occurs, the device could fail to transmit the position of survivors of an avalanche, resulting in delayed search and rescue operations, which could result in severe bodily harm or death if the skier is buried under snow. The firm has received seven reports of the transceiver mode changing while in use. No injuries have been reported.

4. Consumer Action Required
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled transceivers. The remedy is a free repair consisting of a firmware update. To perform the update, consumers must download the Pieps App for iOS or Android devices, connect the transceiver via Bluetooth, and then follow the on-screen prompts to receive a full refund. Alternatively, consumers can take the recalled transceivers to a Black Diamond store or ship the transceiver to the Black Diamond service center to have the firmware installed.
