1. Recall Summary
Petmate, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), announced a recall of Pet Zone-branded Laser Pointer & LED Ball pet toys. The recall was initiated because the products violate the mandatory federal safety standard for consumer products containing button cell or coin batteries (Reese’s Law). The violation involves a risk of serious injury or death from ingestion of the batteries. The recall notice states that no injuries have been reported. The products were sold exclusively at Menards stores nationwide and online from September 2024 through March 2025 for approximately $4. Approximately 15,400 units are affected.
2. Affected Products
The recalled product is the Pet Zone Laser Pointer & LED Ball pet toy set. The set includes a white laser pointer with blue paw prints, measuring approximately 2.9 inches long, and a clear, motion-activated LED ball measuring approximately 1.6 inches in diameter. The laser pointer tube has a silver label printed with the word “Danger” and “Accession No. 2430278-000.” The product packaging displays the “PET ZONE” logo and the words “LASER POINTER & LED BALL” on the front. The back of the packaging lists “Item
:15712EAM.” The product is sold with six preinstalled button cell batteries. The importer is Doskocil Manufacturing Company Inc., dba Petmate, of Arlington, Texas. The product was manufactured in China.
3. Hazard Information
The recalled pet toys violate the mandatory standard for consumer products containing button cell or coin batteries as required by Reese’s Law. According to the recall notice, the LED-illuminated plastic sphere can break upon impact. If the sphere breaks, the button cell batteries inside become easily accessible to children. Swallowed button cell or coin batteries can cause serious injuries, internal chemical burns, and death. The recall notice states that no injuries have been reported in connection with this product.
4. Consumer Action Required
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled pet toys. Consumers are instructed to contact Petmate for a full refund. The recall notice includes a specific note regarding battery disposal: “Button cell and coin batteries are hazardous. If disposing of or recycling button cell or coin batteries, do so in a manner that follows local hazardous waste procedures.”
5. Official Remedy
The official remedy offered by Petmate is a full refund. Consumers must contact the company to initiate the refund process. The specific method for returning the product or obtaining the refund is not specified in the recall notice beyond contacting the company.
