1. Recall Summary
On March 26, 2026, Petzl America, Inc., in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), announced a recall of Nomic and Ergonomic ice climbing axes. 2. Affected Products
The recall involves two models of ice climbing axes:
– Nomic ice climbing axes (model U021AA00) with serial numbers ranging from 17L 0000000 000 to 20F 9999999 999.
– Ergonomic ice climbing axes (model U022AA00) with serial numbers ranging from 18F 0000000 000 to 21L 9999999 999.

The axes are constructed from an aluminum shaft, a steel pick, and a reinforced plastic grip. Nomic axes are black in color. Ergonomic axes are orange in color. The serial number for both models is printed on a label located on the upper portion of the shaft.

Approximately 4,200 units were sold in the United States. An additional 1,160 units were sold in Canada.

The axes were sold at REI, Moosejaw Mountaineering, and other specialty stores nationwide and online at petzl.com, REI.com, and Backcountry.com from December 2017 through March 2022. The retail price ranged from $380 to $440.

3. Hazard Information
The hazard identified in the recall notice is that the ice axe shaft can break at the handle during use. This poses a fall hazard, which can result in serious injury or death. The firm has received 26 reports of shafts breaking at the handle. No injuries have been reported.

4. Consumer Action Required
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled ice axes. Consumers must contact Petzl America to request a free repair kit.
