1. Recall Summary
This recall involves the BBRKIN Biometric Gun Safe, model number QCJJ01. The recall was published on February 22, 2024, by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) under Recall Number 24128. The product was sold exclusively on Amazon.com by BBRKIN. The firm, Jomani International Inc., of Monterey Park, California, imported the safes. The distributor is Ningbo Moyumaoyi Co. Ltd., dba BBRKIN, of China. The safes were manufactured in China. Approximately 2,200 units are affected.
2. Affected Products
The recalled product is the MouTec brand Biometric Firearm Safe, model number QCJJ01. The safe is constructed of gray steel and is used to store firearms and valuables. It measures approximately 13 inches by 14 inches by 15 inches. The safe contains one shelf and can store approximately five firearms. The brand name “MouTec” appears on the front of the safe. The serial number is located on a label on the front of the safe in the lower right corner. The affected serial number range is SQC202121000 through SQC202247603. The safes were sold on Amazon.com from September 2021 through February 2023 for between $170 and $400.
3. Hazard Information
The hazard associated with this product is that the biometric lock on the gun safes can be opened by unauthorized users. This poses a serious injury hazard and risk of death. The firm received one report of the safe being opened by an unauthorized user, a 6-year-old boy. No injuries have been reported.
4. Consumer Action Required
Consumers should immediately stop using the biometric feature of the recalled safe. Consumers must remove the batteries from the safe and only use the key when storing firearms. Consumers should then contact BBRKIN to receive a repair kit or to receive a free replacement safe. To receive a replacement safe, consumers will be asked to disable the biometric reader and email a photo of the disabled biometric reader to support@bbrkin.com. Instructions on how to safely disable the biometric reader are located at www.securitysafe.store/recallreplacement.
5. Official Remedy
The official remedy options are repair or replacement. Consumers may choose to receive a repair kit or a free replacement safe. The replacement safe is provided after the consumer disables the biometric reader and submits a photo of the disabled reader to the firm.
