1. Recall Summary
Gel Blaster LLC, of Austin, Texas, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), announced a recall of approximately 62,700 units of the Gel Blaster SURGE Model 1.0 toy guns. The recall was initiated due to a fire hazard associated with the lithium-ion battery pack located inside the handle of the product. The recall notice was published on October 20, 2022.
2. Affected Products
The recalled product is the Gel Blaster SURGE Model 1.0 toy gun. The gel blaster has a white body with a gray area around the handle. The word “SURGE” is printed in orange on the side of the blaster. A pineapple-shaped hopper that holds the gellets attaches on the top of the unit. A black on/off switch is located at the back of the blaster. The product was sold nationwide and online from August 2020 through October 2021 for approximately $60. Retailers included D2 LLC in Wimberley, Texas; Hey! Joy – Toy Store in Garden City, N.Y., Bloomington, Minn., and Orlando, Fla.; Learning Tree in Prairie Village, Kan.; Kitty Hawk stores along the East Coast and other stores nationwide; and online at www.kittyhawk.com, www.heyjoytoystore.com, www.learningtreetoys.com, www.gelblaster.com, www.kickstarter.com, and www.amazon.com. The product was manufactured in China.
3. Hazard Information
The lithium-ion battery pack inside the handle of the Gel Blaster SURGE Model 1.0 can overheat and ignite, posing a fire hazard. Gel Blaster has received 30 reports of smoking or fire near the handle of the gel blaster where the lithium-ion battery is located. No injuries have been reported in connection with this hazard.
4. Consumer Action Required
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled Gel Blaster SURGE Model 1.0. Consumers should contact Gel Blaster to receive a prepaid mailer to return the product. Gel Blaster is contacting known purchasers directly.
5. Official Remedy
The official remedy is a full refund. Consumers who return the recalled product using the prepaid mailer provided by Gel Blaster will receive a full refund.
