This recall involves electric motors used in gable- and roof-mounted attic fans. The recall was initiated due to a fire hazard associated with the electric motor’s safety cutoff. The distributor has received 159 reports of incidents involving burning or fire related to the recalled attic fan motors. No injuries have been reported.

2. Affected Products
The recalled products are electric motors for gable- and roof-mounted attic fans. These motors were sold only from August 2003 through December 2013. The specific model numbers subject to the recall are: DOW-136-0-34-XIN, DOW-136-0-26-XIN, DOW-136-0-40-XIN, DOW-136-0-40-XIN-3/4″, and D-RE-PSC-127/20-4P1SP. The recalled attic fan motors can be identified by a distinctive vent pattern on the motor end bells. Only motors with this specific vent pattern are included in the recall. The recalled motors have vents that align on the outer ring of the motor end bell and use an alternating pattern of two long vents followed by two short vents. Unaffected motors have vents that align on the inner ring of the motor end bell and use an alternating pattern of one long vent followed by one short vent. Approximately 2.9 million units are affected. The motors were manufactured in China. They were sold at various stores and wholesalers nationwide, including ABC Supply, Lowe’s, and Beacon, both in-store and online, from August 2003 through December 2013. The retail price was between approximately $74 and $92.

3. Hazard Information
The recalled electric motor’s safety cutoff may pose a risk of short circuit and fire hazard while the fan is in use. The distributor has received 159 reports of incidents involving burning or fire related to the recalled attic fan motors. No injuries have been reported.

4. Consumer Action Required
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled electric motors. Consumers must contact Air Vent to initiate the recall process. Consumers will be asked to fill out an online registration and verification form, which requires submitting photos of the recalled attic fan motor. Upon confirmation that the consumer possesses a recalled attic fan motor, the consumer will receive a refund.
