Chemboys LLC, of Liberty, Texas, is recalling its DIYChemicals brand potassium hydroxide and sodium hydroxide products. The recall was initiated because the products fail to meet the child-resistant packaging requirement under the Poison Prevention Packaging Act (PPPA) and violate the labeling requirement of the Federal Hazardous Substances Act (FHSA). The recall was published by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) on August 31, 2023. No injuries have been reported in connection with this recall.

2. Affected Products
The recall involves DIYChemicals potassium hydroxide (KOH Flakes) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) products. These products are commonly used for soapmaking and cleaning. Sodium hydroxide is also referred to as lye or caustic soda. The products were sold in heat-sealed or resealable bags available in sizes ranging from 200 grams to 10 pounds. The word “DIYChemicals” is printed on the front of the product packaging. The products were sold online at DIYChemicals.com, Amazon.com, and eBay.com from May 2021 through March 2023, with prices ranging from $10 to $85 depending on size. The number of units affected is approximately 200. The manufacturer is Chemboys LLC, located in Liberty, Texas. The products were manufactured in the United States.

3. Hazard Information
The recalled products contain potassium hydroxide and sodium hydroxide. These substances must be in child-resistant packaging as required by the Poison Prevention Packaging Act (PPPA). The packaging of the recalled products is not child resistant. This poses a risk of chemical burns and irritation to the skin and eyes if the contents are accessed by children. Additionally, the label on the product violates the Federal Hazardous Substances Act (FHSA) because it does not include mandatory information on the packaging. As of the date of the recall notice, no injuries have been reported.

4. Consumer Action Required
Consumers should immediately store the recalled products in a safe location out of sight and reach of children. Consumers should then contact Chemboys to receive a free replacement child-resistant packaging and a new label. The firm is contacting all known purchasers directly.
