Recall Information Record: XpressGoods High-Powered Magnetic Balls

1. Recall Summary
On December 7, 2023, Xpressgoods.com, of Raleigh, North Carolina, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), announced a recall of approximately 728 units of “Colorful Metal Neodymium Magic Magnetic Balls – 8 color, 5mm.” The recall was issued due to the products failing to meet the requirements of the mandatory federal toy regulation for magnet sets. The recall number is 24048. The products were sold online at www.xpressgoods.com from July 2021 through May 2022 for about $30. The magnets were manufactured in China.

2. Affected Products
The recalled product is identified as “Colorful Metal Neodymium Magic Magnetic Balls – 8 color, 5mm.” These are small, spherical, loose, and separable neodymium rare-earth magnets with a strong magnetic flux. Each magnet has a diameter of 5mm. The set includes multi-colored magnetic balls. The recalled Neodymium Magic Magnetic Balls were sold encased in a clear, plastic case and a tin storage box. No model numbers or UPCs are specified in the recall notice. The number of units affected is about 728.

3. Hazard Information
CPSC testing determined that the magnetic ball sets do not comply with the requirements of the mandatory federal toy regulation. Specifically, the sets contain one or more magnets that fit within CPSC’s small parts cylinder, and the magnets are stronger than permitted. The hazard associated with these products is ingestion. When high-powered magnets are swallowed, the ingested magnets can attract each other, or another metal object, and become lodged in the digestive system. This can result in perforations, twisting and/or blockage of the intestines, infection, blood poisoning, and death. As of the recall date, no injuries have been reported in connection with this specific product. However, the CPSC estimates that 2,400 magnet ingestions were treated in hospital emergency departments from 2017 through 2021, and the CPSC is aware of seven deaths involving the ingestion of hazardous magnets, including two outside of the United States.

4. Consumer Action Required
Consumers should stop using the recalled magnetic balls immediately. They should take the products away from children. Consumers must contact XpressGoods to receive a prepaid label to return the recalled products. The recall notice states that XpressGoods is notifying all known purchasers directly.
