Recall Summary
This recall involves certain lithium-ion batteries used with Sublue Mix underwater scooters and replacement batteries sold separately. The recall was published on March 13, 2025, by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) under Recall Number 25169. The recalling firm is Sublue Technology Inc., of Walnut, California. The products were manufactured in China.
Affected Products
The recall covers Sublue Mix underwater scooter lithium-ion batteries that are black in color. The scooters themselves were sold in three colors: arctic white, space blue, and aqua blue. The scooters have “Sublue” printed on the top and “Whiteshark Mix Underwater Scooter” printed on the side. The battery compartment is located on the underside of the scooter. The recall includes both the batteries that came with the scooter and separately sold replacement batteries, provided they are black. Approximately 40,370 units are affected. The scooters and replacement batteries were sold online at www.amazon.com, www.costco.com, www.sublue.com, www.westmarine.com, and other websites from June 2018 through February 2025. The scooters sold for approximately $550, and replacement batteries sold for approximately $150.
Hazard Information
The lithium-ion batteries can overheat and ignite, posing a fire hazard to consumers. Sublue has received 161 reports of thermal and swelling incidents involving the lithium-ion batteries. Among these reports, there were eight reports of fire, one report of injury, and two reports of property damage totaling $651,400.
Consumer Action Required
Consumers should stop using the scooters with the recalled batteries immediately. Consumers should contact Sublue for a free new generation battery replacement (gray battery). Sublue will provide a battery collection kit for the consumer to return the recalled battery. The replacement battery will be provided upon return of the recalled battery. Consumers are instructed not to throw the recalled battery in the trash or in used battery recycling boxes found at various retail and home improvement stores. Recalled lithium-ion batteries should be disposed of in accordance with any local and state ordinances, following the procedures established by municipal recycling centers for damaged, defective, or recalled lithium batteries, because these potentially hazardous batteries must be handled differently than other batteries.
Official Remedy
The official remedy is a free replacement. Consumers who own a recalled black battery will receive a new generation gray battery from Sublue after returning the recalled battery using the provided collection kit.
