Recall Information Record: biOrigins Sodium Hydroxide Products
1. Recall Summary
On April 7, 2022, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) published Recall Alert Number 22738 regarding biOrigins-branded sodium hydroxide products. The recall was initiated by the importer, Madar Corporation LTD, of the United Kingdom. The products were sold exclusively online at Amazon.com from July 2020 through July 2021. The recall was issued due to the product’s failure to meet child-resistant packaging requirements under the Poison Prevention Packaging Act (PPPA) and a violation of the Federal Hazardous Substances Act (FHSA) labeling requirements. As of the recall date, no injuries had been reported.
2. Affected Products
The recall involves biOrigins-branded sodium hydroxide products. The product was sold in 500-gram and 1-kilogram zip-top, silver bags. The front of the bag features a white and blue label with the biOrigins logo and the text “LYE CAUSTIC SODA/SODIUM HYDROXIDE.” The back of the product displays the weight and one of the following batch numbers: 4430708, 4423901, 4415403, or 4408414. Approximately 30 units were sold in the United States. The products were manufactured in the United Kingdom.
3. Hazard Information
The product contains sodium hydroxide, a hazardous substance that, under the Poison Prevention Packaging Act, must be sold in child-resistant packaging. The packaging of the recalled products is not child resistant. This poses a risk of chemical burns and irritation to the skin and eyes if a child gains access to the contents. Additionally, the label on the product violates the Federal Hazardous Substances Act (FHSA) by omitting mandatory information required on the packaging. No injuries have been reported in connection with this recall.
4. Consumer Action Required
Consumers who have purchased the recalled biOrigins sodium hydroxide products should immediately store the product in a safe location out of reach of children. Consumers should then contact Madar Corporation to arrange for a full refund and to receive a free warning label. Madar Corporation is contacting all purchasers directly regarding the recall.
5. Official Remedy
The official remedy offered by Madar Corporation is a full refund for the recalled product, along with a free warning label. Consumers are not required to return the product to receive the refund and label. The refund amount is based on the original purchase price, which ranged from $27 to $40.
