Recall Information Record: Bose Acoustimass, Lifestyle, and Companion Bass Modules

1. Recall Summary
This recall involves select Bose bass modules manufactured before April 1, 2006, that were sold with certain Acoustimass, Lifestyle, and Companion home theater systems. The recall was announced on June 29, 2023, by Bose Corporation, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The recall number is 23234. Approximately 884,000 units were sold in the United States, with an additional 98,000 sold in Canada and about 18,300 sold in Mexico.

2. Affected Products
The recalled products are bass modules in black or white, sold as components of the following Bose systems: Acoustimass 6 III (date codes 2090 through 6091 only), Acoustimass 10 III (all date codes), Acoustimass 15 II (date codes 2090 through 6091), Acoustimass 16 (all date codes), Acoustimass 5 Series IV (all date codes), Acoustimass15 (all date codes), Acoustimass 20 (all date codes), Companion CS-6 (all date codes), Lifestyle 5 Series II (all date codes), Lifestyle 8 (all date codes), Lifestyle 12 (all date codes), Lifestyle 20 (all date codes), Lifestyle 25 (all date codes), Lifestyle 30 (all date codes), Lifestyle 50 (all date codes), Powered Acoustimass 5 Series III (all date codes), Powered Acoustimass 5 Series IV (all date codes), Powered Acoustimass 8 (all date codes), Powered Acoustimass 8 Series II (all date codes), Powered Acoustimass 9 (all date codes), Powered Acoustimass 20 (all date codes), Powered Acoustimass 25 (all date codes), Powered Acoustimass 25 Series II (all date codes), Powered Acoustimass 30 (all date codes), Powered Acoustimass 30 Series II (all date codes), Powered Acoustimass 800 (all date codes), and Powered Acoustimass 900 (all date codes).

The product name, Bose logo, serial number (labeled as “SER. NO.”), and date code are printed on a label located on the back or bottom of the bass module. The date code is the eighth through eleventh digits of the serial number. The units were sold at Bose stores, Best Buy, Circuit City, Sam’s Club, Sears, and other electronics stores nationwide, as well as online at Bose.com, from January 1994 through April 2007, with prices ranging from $220 to $2,200. The bass modules were manufactured in the United States, Mexico, and Ireland.

3. Hazard Information
The speaker’s electrical components can fail, posing a fire hazard. Bose has received 21 reports worldwide of the bass modules igniting or melting, including three incidents of fires resulting in property damage to carpeting, an entertainment cabinet, and materials surrounding the bass box. No injuries have been reported.

4. Consumer Action Required
Consumers should immediately stop using and unplug the recalled bass modules. They should then contact Bose to arrange for a free repair of the bass module or a 40% discount on a replacement product.
