1. Recall Summary
On May 18, 2023, a recall was announced for Ventura Safety Adult Bike Helmets. The recall was initiated by Messingschlager USA LLC, doing business as Cycle Force, of Ames, Iowa. The helmets were manufactured in China. The recall was published on the CPSC website.
2. Affected Products
This recall involves Ventura Safety Adult Bike Helmets in size Medium (M), which fits a head circumference of approximately 21¼ to 22¾ inches. The recalled helmets have model numbers 731434, 731436, 733192, or 733194. The model number is located on a manufacturer sticker inside the helmet.
The recalled helmets were sold in the following color combinations: white carbon, neon yellow, white/pink, and white/orange. The helmets feature a removable black visor, black straps, and a black buckle. The word “Ventura” is written on the front of the helmet visor and on the left and right sides of the helmet. A factory production sticker inside the helmet contains a product code beginning with “S-166” followed by the month and year of production. Affected helmets were produced from October 2017 through January 2023.
Approximately 1,750 units were sold in the United States. The helmets were sold at Home Depot, JCPenney, Kohl’s, Play It Again Sports, and independent sports and bicycle stores nationwide, as well as online at InGearOutfitters.com, Walmart.com, and Amazon.com. The sale period was from October 2017 through January 2023. The retail price was approximately $40.
3. Hazard Information
The recalled helmets do not comply with the positional stability requirement of the CPSC federal safety standard for bicycle helmets. As a result, the helmets can fail to protect in the event of a crash, posing a risk of head injury. No injuries have been reported in connection with this recall.
4. Consumer Action Required
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled helmets. To receive a refund, consumers must destroy the helmet by cutting off the straps. After destroying the helmet, consumers should complete the form at www.bikeaidonline.com/recall-ventura-sport-helmet and email photos of the helmet with the straps cut off to bikeaid@cyclefg.com to prove destruction. After providing proof of destruction, consumers should dispose of the recalled helmet.
