1. Recall Summary

On June 22, 2023, Research Products Corporation, of Madison, Wisconsin, initiated a recall of approximately 36,200 steam humidifiers sold in the United States and an additional 3,800 sold in Canada. The recall involves steam humidifiers with “D” shaped electrode connector wires sold under the AprilAire, Coleman, Luxaire, Bryant, Carrier, and York brand names. The recall was issued due to a fire hazard associated with the electrode connector wires.

2. Affected Products

The recalled products are steam humidifiers with “D” shaped electrode connector wires. These units are generally installed alongside HVAC equipment but are separate units. The model number can be found on a silver label placed in the bottom left corner on the outside left side panel of the steam humidifier. The following brand and model numbers are included in this recall:

– AprilAire®: Models 800, 801, 865, 866
– Carrier®: Model HUMXXSTM3034
– Bryant®: Model HUMXXSTM3034
– York®: Model S1-STEAM 8000T01
– Coleman®: Model S1-STEAM 8000T01
– Luxaire®: Model S1-STEAM 8000T01

The products were sold by HVAC contractors nationwide and online at Amazon.com, Sylvane.com, Supplyhouse.com, Humidifiers.com, and other websites from June 2010 through January 2015. The units were installed for between $2,000 and $3,500. The manufacturer is Research Products Corporation, located in Madison, Wisconsin. The products were manufactured in the United States.

3. Hazard Information

The recalled steam humidifiers contain a specific type of electrode wire with a “D” shaped connector. This connector can loosen, causing arcing and/or overheating. This condition poses a fire hazard to consumers. The firm has received 103 reports of the recalled humidifiers overheating, including 10 incidents resulting in smoke or residential fires. These incidents have resulted in total property damage exceeding $10 million.

4. Consumer Action Required

Consumers should immediately stop using and shut off the recalled humidifiers. Consumers should then contact Research Products to receive a free electrode wire repair kit and assistance with identifying a qualified contractor to schedule an appointment for a free replacement of their electrode connector wires.
