1. Recall Summary
Cinmar LLC, of West Chester, Ohio, is recalling approximately 70,000 Frontgate Resort Collection Newport Aluminum and Teak Chaise Lounge Chairs. The recall was initiated due to a finger crushing and amputation hazard associated with the adjustable backrest mechanism. The recall notice was published by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) on June 20, 2024.
2. Affected Products
The recall involves all Cinmar Frontgate Resort Collection Newport Aluminum Chaises (SKU 67333) and Frontgate Resort Collection Newport Teak Chaises (SKU 166218). The aluminum chaises were sold in sets of two in five colors: architectural bronze, champagne silver, cobalt, matte black, and matte white. The teak chaises were sold in sets of two in weathered and natural finishes.
The chaises are reclining outdoor lounge chairs measuring approximately 51 inches long and 31 inches wide. They feature a powder-coated aluminum or teak frame, a chaise-style seat, and a mesh backrest. The chairs have an adjustable backrest that reclines to four positions, from upright to fully reclined. “FRONTGATE” is printed in black lettering on a silver badge located at the back of the chair.
The products were sold at Frontgate stores in Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, and Texas, as well as online at Frontgate.com and in Frontgate catalogues. The sales period was from February 2014 through December 2023. The retail price ranged between $600 and $1,400. The products were manufactured in China.
3. Hazard Information
The hazard involves the adjustable backrest mechanism. When a consumer adjusts the backrest while seated, the backrest can unexpectedly descend with force. This action poses finger crushing and amputation hazards.
As stated in the recall notice, Cinmar has received three reports of incidents involving consumers’ fingers becoming entrapped between the adjustable backrest and the chair frame. These incidents resulted in two partial finger amputation injuries and one finger-crushing injury that required surgery.
4. Consumer Action Required
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled chaise lounge chairs. Consumers must contact Cinmar to receive a free repair. As part of the process, consumers are required to submit a photo of their chaise to Cinmar. Upon submission, Cinmar will provide a free repair kit, which includes a new backrest support bar and assembly instructions.
5. Official Remedy
The official remedy for this recall is a free repair. Consumers are not entitled to a refund or replacement under this recall notice. The repair is facilitated through a kit provided by Cinmar.
