1. Recall Summary
On June 2, 2022, Elevate Outdoor Collective, doing business as Backcountry Access, Inc., initiated a recall of Backcountry Access Tracker4 Avalanche Transceivers. The recall was published by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) under Recall Number 22147. The recall involves approximately 9,000 units in the United States and an additional 450 units sold in Canada. The recall was prompted by reports of a defect that could affect the device’s ability to function in an emergency.

2. Affected Products
The recall involves the Backcountry Access Tracker4 Avalanche Transceiver, sold in yellow and black. The transceiver features a digital screen on the front and measures approximately five inches long and three inches wide. The brand name “BCA” and the model name “Tracker4” are printed on the front of the unit. The serial number is located inside the battery compartment after removing the top AAA battery. Only transceivers with serial numbers beginning with “21H05” or “21H06” are affected by this recall. The products were sold at REI, Evo, Cripple Creek Backcountry, and other specialty stores nationwide, as well as online at amazon.com, backcountry.com, snowbigdeal.com, jagaloon.com, and specialty websites from July 2021 through February 2022 for approximately $390.

3. Hazard Information
According to the recall notice, the toggle switch on the transceiver can separate from the unit. If the toggle switch separates, it can prevent the transceiver from switching to search mode. This malfunction makes it difficult to locate a skier buried in an avalanche, which can result in severe bodily harm or death if a skier is buried under snow. The distributor, Elevate Outdoor Collective, has received 14 reports of broken toggle switches. No injuries have been reported.

4. Consumer Action Required
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled Tracker4 Avalanche Transceiver. Consumers must contact Backcountry Access to receive a prepaid shipping label to return the recalled transceiver. The recall notice does not specify any alternative or interim use instructions for consumers who do not have a replacement device. Consumers should not attempt to repair the transceiver themselves.

5. Official Remedy
The official remedy is a free replacement transceiver. After contacting Backcountry Access and receiving a prepaid shipping label, consumers should return the recalled transceiver. Upon receipt of the returned unit, Backcountry Access will provide a free replacement transceiver. No refund option is listed in the recall notice.
