Recall Summary
On March 28, 2024, a recall was announced for 5mm Magnetic Beads HIGH POWER AAA Grade. The recall was issued by Stateside Bead Supply Inc., of Issaquah, Washington. The product was manufactured by Boss Magnet, of Taiwan, and was sold online at www.statesidebeadsupply.com from November 2022 through June 2023. The recall number is 24175. The recall was published on the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) website.

Affected Products
The recalled product is described as 5mm Magnetic Beads HIGH POWER AAA Grade. These are small, spherical, loose and separable magnets with a strong magnetic flux. The magnetic beads are gun metal gray in color. They were sold as a strand in a clear, plastic bag. The packaging includes a label with the text “Stateside Bead Supply” printed on it. The product was sold for between $7 and $9. Approximately 450 units are affected by this recall. No model numbers or UPCs are specified in the recall notice.

Hazard Information
The magnetic beads violate the requirements of the mandatory federal magnet regulation. The violation is based on the fact that the product contains one or more magnets that fit within CPSC’s small parts cylinder, and the magnets are stronger than permitted. The hazard associated with ingestion of high-powered magnets is that when swallowed, the ingested magnets can attract each other or another metal object and become lodged in the digestive system. This can result in perforations, twisting and/or blockage of the intestines, infection, blood poisoning, and death. No injuries related to this specific product have been reported. The recall notice includes a general CPSC estimate that 2,400 magnet ingestions were treated in hospital emergency departments from 2017 through 2021, and that CPSC is aware of seven deaths since 2005 involving the ingestion of hazardous magnets, including two outside of the United States.

Consumer Action Required
Consumers should stop using the recalled magnetic beads immediately. They should take the product away from children. Consumers should then contact Stateside Bead Supply to receive a pre-paid label to return the recalled products. Stateside Bead Supply is notifying all known purchasers directly.

The official remedy for this recall is a full refund. Consumers who return the recalled products using the pre-paid label provided by Stateside Bead Supply will receive a full refund.
