Pacific Cycle Inc., of Madison, Wisconsin, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), announced a recall of Ascend Cabrillo and Minaret Electric Bikes. The recall was published on January 25, 2024. The recall notice states that the wiring harness that manages the charging of the lithium-ion battery was not properly assembled, creating a risk of overheating and fire while charging. The firm has received three reports of the battery catching on fire, resulting in one injury of second-degree burns. Approximately 1,700 units are affected in the United States.

2. Affected Products
This recall involves the following electric bikes:
– Ascend Cabrillo: Model numbers R7583BPS and R7585BPS. Sold in a sand or gray color. Features a rear storage rack.
– Ascend Minaret: Model number R7586BPS. Sold in black with red and gray accents, or a step-through frame style.

Identification details per the recall notice:
– The model number and “Pacific Cycle” are printed on the service label located on the seat tube above the bottom bracket.
– The word “Ascend” is located on the downtube.
– The word “Cabrillo” or “Minaret” is located on the chain stay.
– The electric bikes have an electric assist motor.

The recalled electric bikes were sold at Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s stores nationwide and online at basspro.com and cabelas.com from January 2023 through November 2023 for between $1,400 and $1,500. The bikes were manufactured in China. The distributor is listed as Bass Pro LLC, of Springfield, Missouri.

3. Hazard Information
The hazard identified in the recall notice is that the wiring harness that manages the charging of the lithium-ion battery was not properly assembled. This defect creates a risk of overheating and fire while the battery is charging. The firm has received three reports of the battery catching on fire. One injury of second-degree burns has been reported as a result of this hazard.

4. Consumer Action Required
Consumers should immediately stop using and unplug the recalled electric bikes.
