1. Recall Summary
Specialized Bicycle Components Inc., of Morgan Hill, California, is recalling approximately 32,400 units of Specialized Vado and Como IGH e-bikes with chain/belt guards. An additional 3,200 units were sold in Canada and approximately 190 units were sold in Mexico. The recall was initiated due to a fall hazard associated with the protective chain/belt guard. The recall notice was published by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) on March 27, 2025.
2. Affected Products
The recall involves Specialized Vado and Como IGH e-bikes equipped with chain/belt guards. These e-bikes feature an internal gear hub (IGH) and have no rear derailleur (gear shift). The Specialized Bicycle brand name is located on the bike frame. The bicycles are offered in a variety of colors, including black, limestone, red, sand, sea foam, navy, purple, white, gray, raspberry, umber, dark gray, and yellow. The model numbers are printed on the white and black serial number label located on the underside of the bicycle’s top tube. Recalled model numbers include: COMO 3.0 IGH, COMO 5.0 IGH UL, VADO 3.0 IGH STEP THROUGH UL, COMO 3.0 IGH UL, COMO SL 4.0, VADO 3.0 IGH UL, COMO 4.0 IGH, COMO SL 5.0, VADO 5.0 IGH, COMO 4.0 IGH UL, VADO 3.0 IGH, VADO 5.0 IGH ST, COMO 5.0 IGH, VADO 3.0 IGH ST, and VADO 5.0 IGH STEP THROUGH UL. The e-bikes were sold by authorized Specialized Bicycle retailers nationwide and online from March 2021 through November 2024 for between $3,250 and $5,750. The bicycles were manufactured in Vietnam and Taiwan.
3. Hazard Information
The hazard identified in the recall notice is that the bike’s protective chain/belt guard does not cover the belt drive. As a result, loose clothing can become entrapped in the belt drive, posing a fall hazard to the rider. As of the date of the recall notice, no injuries have been reported.
4. Consumer Action Required
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled Specialized Vado and Como IGH e-bikes. Consumers should contact their nearest authorized Specialized retailer to schedule a free installation of an updated protective chain/belt guard. Specialized Bicycle Components is contacting all known purchasers directly regarding this recall.
